Trinity United Methodist Church's innovative ministry repurposes plastic waste to aid those in need |
In New Albany, Indiana, Trinity United Methodist Church has launched a compassionate initiative to support the homeless community by converting discarded plastic bags into durable sleeping mats.
Every Tuesday morning, volunteers gather at the church's 'Mission Depot' to cut, stretch, and weave thousands of grocery bags into mats designed to provide comfort and protection from the elements.
Each mat requires approximately 1,000 plastic bags and up to 20 hours to complete, involving sorting, preparing, weaving on a loom, and adding a carrying strap.
To date, the group has completed over 50 mats, which are distributed both locally in southern Indiana and globally to areas in need.
For those interested in contributing, the church welcomes volunteers and donations of clean, dry plastic grocery bags.
