The Community Foundation of Southern Indiana has awarded $33,000 in grants to support six food pantries serving Clark and Floyd counties.
Each pantry, including Center for Lay Ministries in Jeffersonville, received $5,500 to better combat food insecurity locally.
The Center for Lay Ministries recently saw a sharp rise in demand, with over 1,800 visits in October—300 more than last year—with many first-time clients, including government employees, seeking help during the shutdown.
Executive Director Kara Brown highlighted the proactive community response to this growing need.
Additional recipients are Faith Harvest, First Baptist Church Hope Center, Hope Southern Indiana, Kingdom Life Church, and the NAFC Public Library Dare to Care Food Pantry.
Funding comes from CFSI’s Community Impact Fund, fueled by a $2-for-$1 match through Lilly Endowment's GIFT VIII until December 2025, amplifying support for urgent and long-term local needs. Read More... |
Major progress is unfolding at Parkwood Elementary, where construction of a modern campus is moving swiftly after breaking ground in April 2024.
The new facility promises advanced classrooms, upgraded safety, and collaborative learning areas designed to support both students and staff.
In a pivotal decision, the Houston County Board of Education approved a rezoning plan to merge Parkwood and Westside into one attendance zone by the 2026–2027 school year.
Beginning that fall, Parkwood will house Pre-K to second grade, while Westside will welcome third through fifth graders, a shift aimed at streamlining resources and strengthening the school community.
Roughly 179 Westside students from Pre-K to first grade will move to Parkwood, and about 292 Parkwood students in grades two to four will transfer to Westside.
Community voices remain central, with ongoing meetings inviting feedback on attendance zone maps before the board’s final decision.
Parkwood Primary’s grand opening is set for August 2026, ushering in a bright future for local students. Read More... |
